It all began in the mid 1980s when two of the famed Noršberg trawlermen brothers at Hvalba, Sušuroy ("Southern Isle"), decided to establish the gear making enterprise Bergiš to serve their new trawlers, the Niels Pauli TG 405 and the Steintór TG 304. The trawlers turned out to become two of the best performing fishing vessels of the Faroe Islands, and the gear manufacturer spelled success.
Since then, however, a lot of water has gone under the bridge with several vessels added to the Faroes' fleet of deep sea trawlers. Bergiš changed ownership in the mid 1990s, as Dan Thomsen and his sons took over to regenerate the business after a period of decline. We wanted to keep the old name Bergiš (meaning the Seacliff), which symbolizes strength and stability -- a good name considering our values and the fact that Bergiš Fishing Gear has gained a powerful position to continue its growth, backed by a strong cooperation with other gear makers, most notably our partner Vónin.
